mature fusion (1989), from Dont Try This at Home
Michael Brecker and Don Grolnick, composers; Michael Brecker, tenor sax and
Akai EWI; Mike Stern, guitar; Don Grolnick, piano; Charlie Haden, acoustic bass;
Jeff Andrews, fretless electric bass; Jack DeJohnette, drums; Mark OConnor, violin.

Brecker uses an Akai EWI wind controller, which is capable of playing any of the settings available to keyboard synthesizers. It is played like a saxophone and is capable of breath accents and articulations. The opening duet, which sounds like traditional bluegrass, features Brecker on EWI and Mark OConnor on violin. Mike Sterns guitar shows the strong influence of rock-guitar soloing styles. All the musicians have virtuoso technique and perform in a highly improvisational relationship. Their communication is extraordinary and very responsive to the soloist. Their ability to improvise large architectural solos is truly remarkable. The rhythmic patterns supporting the texture are a hybrid of rock and jazz elements. The fusion of the two styles is complete.
